Abstract

Psidium acidum (DC.) Landrum (Myrtaceae), a native species to South America that is part of the group of acid guavas, is recorded for the first time in Cuba. Botanical methods were used, such as work with collections, the use of specialized catalogs, the description and scientific illustration. The usefulness of mature fruit for human consumption, the likely fungicidal and antioxidants action of extracts obtained from its branches and leaves, as well as its potential use as a graft support of commercial cultivars are discussed. An analytical key is offered to differentiate it from related taxa present in the Cuban archipelago.
