Abstract

Honor has played a significant role in the Atlantic world, forming part of the value systems that have structured its societies throughout history. At the beginning of the modern era, the Spanish and Portuguese expansion transferred to their colonies the Mediterranean-European notion of honor, to be adapted and redefined according to local cultures.
