Abstract
The purpose was to examine the role of syntactic awareness -the ability to reflect on syntactic aspects of language- in reading comprehension. 160 Chilean schoolchildren from 7 to 14 years old were assessed, through tasks of syntactic awareness, phonological awareness, word reading, text comprehension and memory. The study found that syntactic awareness can predict significantly and independently reading. comprehension in more advanced stages of reading acquisition.
