Abstract

Focal species conservation is used throughout the world as an effective means of maintaining populations of endangered species and their habitats, as well as to engage local communities. Over the years, much biodiversity has been conserved under the umbrella of single species focused efforts. While the prominence of this approach has declined somewhat, it is still one of the most useful tools in the tropics and subtropics to encourage and implement effective conservation action. This section will provide an overview of innovative approaches being used to conserve single species in the face of growing social and ecological complexity across the tropics and subtropics.
