Postnatal development of the human entorhinal cortex

Keywords: entorhinal cortex, postnatal development, hemispheres, cytoarchitectonic subfields

Abstract

This chapter aims to describe the appearance of the entorhinal cortex at the time of birth, as well as the postnatal modifications leading to the adult pattern. The human adult entorhinal cortex is not uniform, and presents variations along both the medial-lateral and anterior-posterior axes, resulting in eight different cytoarchitectonic subfields. The report is based on the examination of a total of thirty-two cases, ages ranging from birth to seventeen years of both sexes. Either hemisphere, or both when available, were used.
