Abstract

Objective:To determine the association between BMI and skin-fold thickness in pre-pubertal children. Methods: We selected non-probabilistic way (accidental) 527 prepubescent children (264 boys and 263 girls). Body weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), subs-capular skin-fold, abdominal and supra-iliac was evaluated. The data were processed through contingency tables 4 x 4, using the 2chi-square (X). To verify the correlation between the proportions Kappa index (IK) was used. Results: BMI presents weak concordance with subs-capular skin-fold in children (IK = 0.02) and girls (IK = 0.23), acceptable agreement with supra-iliac fold in children (IK = 0.45) and girls (IK = 0.39) and moderate agreement with abdominal fold in children (IK = 0.37) and girls (IK = 0.35). Conclusion: The supra-iliac and abdominal folds show agreement with BMI. The results suggest use at the IMC to assess the over-weight and obesity in children
