Abstract

Meaning holism is a well-known theory in the field of the philosophy of language. Over the last 70 years this theory has been interpreted in an uncharitable way. The aim of this paper is to present the innovation presented by Henry Jackman (1999a) in the studies on meaning holism, offering a new interpretation of this theory, which he called "moderate holism". From this paper - which was followed by three others (1999b, 2005 and 2015) - Jackman presents his first arguments about a holistic theory 796FRAGMENTOS DE CULTURA, Goiânia, v. 29, n. 4, p. 788-796, 2019.of language that overcomes much of the arguments against the traditional version (radical, in his wor-ds). Jackman's moderate holism offers an important advance for the philosophical studies of language, especially as we relate our beliefs to the meanings of objects in a language.
