DSM Light Trapping Technology for Bifacial PV Modules

Abstract

DSM is developing innovative breakthrough technologies to boost the cost/performance ratio of solar energy systems. In this paper we present the development of DSM’s proprietary light trapping technology for improving the performance of bifacial PV modules and to further boost and broaden their applicability worldwide. The performance of the light trapping technology on bifacial modules has been studied using ray tracing simulations. Durability testing for the outdoor durable formulation has been performed and a roll-to-sheet application process has been developed. A significant performance gain of DSM’s light trapping film applied to the back side of bifacial PV modules has been predicted by optical simulations and confirmed by indoor and outdoor tests. During a 6-month outdoor evaluation in Konstanz, a significant performance enhancement of 2.5% in kWh on top of current state-of-the-art bifacial PV modules has been demonstrated. With our current development efforts, we are aiming to increase this performance benefit even further.
