Ecological NGOs in Spain: discourse, ideological denialism and the climate crisis

Abstract

This research analyzes the discourse of four environmental NGOs based in Spain — Greenpeace, WWF, Friends of the Earth and Ecologists in Action— in relation to ideological denial of climate change from 2004 to 2018. For ideological denial of climate change, this work is it refers to the denial of the anthropocentric ideology underlying the climate crisis, not just the denial of its anthropogenic causes (Almiron, 2020; Almiron & Tafalla, 2019; Almirón & Xifra, 2020). Through a quantitative and qualitative investigation of 1,323 documents, through the analysis of frameworks (Entman, 1993) and critical analysis of discourse (Fairclough, 2010; Van Dijk, 2009; Wodak & Meyer, 2001), the investigation offers a perspective of what is the role of these organizations in relation to climate inaction. Particularly, it is studied to what extent the NGOs consider with their speech to disseminate consistent solutions aligned with the problems detected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change —IPCC—. These problematic issues are animal-based diet, human overpopulation and economic growth, and added a recurring thematic quarter in IPCC reports: technology as a solution. The detailed results that the environmental NGOs studied implicitly perpetuate ideological denialism and determined to climate inaction. Keywords: Discourse, denialism, climate change, NGO, CDA.
