Abstract

Sediments in areas of frequent upwelling have strong impacts on marine biogeochemical cycles and are characterized by high accumulation rates that favor a microxic/anoxic sediment–water interface. Mejillones Bay (23°S; Humboldt Current) is one of the most productive systems and is subject to the presence of an oxygen minimum zone that configure particular local conditions. In addition, in this marine environment, there are problems of metal enrichment (e.g. Fe, Ni, Pb, Cu, As) from both anthropogenic (mining activities) and natural input.
