Abstract

The family Galaxiidae is represented in Chile by five species. The state of knowledge of them is in general scarce except in the case of G. maculatus due to its economical value. On the other hand, G. globiceps is the less known of them because it has been recorded in two localities, in Los Alerces, near Puerto Montt, the type locality and the Chiloe island. The last record of only one specimen from Chiloe National Park reinforces the previous idea of its scarcity and rarity in the southern part of Chile. The aim of this work is to reevaluate the current conservation status of G. globiceps through the revision of works on freshwater fishes of southern Chile. The general conclusion of this work states that G. globiceps deserves the state of being in danger of extintion.
