Abstract
This chapter discusses an art-based environmental education research project carried out in 2021, in the Chiloé Archipelago (southern Chile). The project brought together rural school communities –including primary and secondary students, teachers and parents– who envision a collective future, framed by co-construction exchanges and experience-oriented dialogues. Considering the complex socio-environmental challenges threatening our planet today, the project invited children to develop field ethnographies that look for the Ngen or ancient guardian spirits that dwell in the woods. This methodology promoted descriptive and creative abilities regarding human-nature relationships, inquiry about symbolic powers, and the design and creation of masks that impersonate new Ngen. The project’s conclusions highlight the potential of transdisciplinary perspectives that help frame, discuss and recreate educational experiences. As a true synthesis of traditional knowledge, hands-on investigation and pedagogical inspiration, the new Ngen created by children enact regenerative opportunities that frame possible futures for all.
