Optimization of a Novel Active Dry Powder Inhaler. American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists

Abstract
Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) provide an stable platform for the pulmonary delivery of biologics and antibiotics. DPIs disperse powder upon application of patient inspiratory flow. Due to cohesive forces, dispersion of micronized powders can be a challenge especially for high drug payloads. Active DPIs provide an external energy source to the powder to aid drug aerosolization In this work, we present a novel active DPI that utilizes an externally rotating magnet and magnetically-responsive objects in the drug reservoir canister to aerosolize powder to the airways of a user. Like most DPIs the performance is still highly dependent on the design and fluid dynamics within the canister. Studies were therefore undertaken to optimize the device in this regard.
