Abstract

This article provides novel information for investigations related to the origin of the distilled beverage known as "pisco" within Chilean colonial society. Analyzes historical records of the Alhué farm, located in the central area of Chile, where in 1717 several pisco bottles appear as part of the production of brandy from the farm. These new records are earlier than those found in Elqui and open the possibility that "pisco" production was prior to the 18th century and further south, in the central valley of Chile. Even more important, this work establishes a family and commercial link between the Alhué and Elqui estates that allows us to apply a hypothesis for the diffusion of the name "pisco" in colonial Chile.
