Abstract

People characterized as disabled, denominated with functional diversity or in a disabled situation as well (Shakespiare, 2018), they have a particular role in the contemporary political framework. People with disabilities, intellectual disabilities, in this case, have been represented as subjects to care; however, some people subvert or resist that social category (SENADIS, 2016; Grue, 2016). To approach this subversion of these people, a theoretical-analytical orientation from Critical Discourse Studies is used (Fairclough, 2013), framed in the foundations of Systemic Functional Linguistic; specifically, using the APPRAISAL system (Martin & White, 2005. In methodological terms, this study considers a qualitative orientation of case study with a person with an intellectual disability who presents active participation in different social activities. The findings show that in the analyzed corpus emerge a combination of evaluative patterns in negative/positive polarity of judgment of capacity, integrity and affect that allow subverting the discourse about itself as well as positioning a critical political identity.
