Competencies and skills of the intensive care physician in Chile

Pedreros, Cesar

Abstract

The competences necessary for intensive care have been studied worldwide. In Chile there is a technical standard in this regard approved since 2015 that identifies functional areas. In Europe, the CoBaTriCE collaboration proposed competencies for the specialist through a process of public participation. These skills that highlight the need for soft skills are undervalued by traditional programs at the local level. While, on the one hand, the technical processes in intensive care are increasingly automated, there is general agreement that an important part of the skills of the intensive care physician corresponds to interpersonal communication, teamwork and non-automated management. In this sense, the figure of a mentor has been recognized internationally as a relevant tool in medical education to strengthen the integral formation of the professional. Additionally, there is a growing availability of online technological resources that are not fully exploited by educators, either due to lack of knowledge or lack of training in their use as teaching tools.
