Open World Games and Player Identities: A Literature Based Categorization Proposal

Keywords: Open World Games, Taxonomy, Categorization, Video Games, Players

Abstract

Open World Games (OWG) are videogames that offer in-game freedom for the player to choose whether to play the central plot or explore and create their own stories. This freedom of play allows for different ways of identity projection into the video game. The following article attempts a taxonomy of gameplay in OWG, starting from Bartle´s (1996) proposal for MUD games.
