The imaginary and the representation of the technological metanarrative: tourism in outer space

Abstract

In this article, we explore, from a theoretical-reflexive perspective, the notions of "symbol," "imaginary," and "social representations." We will focus our attention on the metanarrative of technology, understood as one of the main pillars of a globalized society preoccupied with consumption, hedonism, success, and progress. Our work aims to show how, when it comes to technology, there exists a symbolic narrative that serves as the imaginary and representational matrix of a globalized society. Through a descriptive and interpretative approach, we will offer an explanation of the technology metanarrative as exemplified by space tourism. We assume that all human creations respond to an act of symbolization, fixing in place the needs, projects, and objectives that society sets for itself as it (re)defines the world. In this sense, we found that the technology metanarrative can inspire a social imaginary that comes into being and is represented by space tourism - that is, by the conquest, utilization, commercialization, and subordination of the universe.
