The teaching of philosophy at the Colegio Maximo San Miguel (Santiago de Chile) during the 18th century
Abstract
This article aims to explain the fundamental aspects of philosophical teaching during the 18th century in one of the most important educational institutions in colonial Chile, namely the Colegio Máximo San Miguel of the Society of Jesus. To explain this, the article will first present the central historical-philosophical and contextual aspects in the philosophical formation of their students. Following this, it will offer a panoramic description of the philosophical activity in the institution. This will be detailed both through a chronology of the teaching work of its masters as well as through the essential content of its lessons. The intention of this is, on the one hand, to present the educational role of the Jesuit order in Chile during the colonial period and to recover the sources of education just before their expulsion from the American territories, and, on the other hand, to provide relevant material to guide new research.
