Abstract

The article presents an argument for conceiving impeachment as a bidimensional, legally mediated, mechanism of political control, whose function consists in protecting the political system’s efficacy conditions. With that purpose, the paper shows the need for an overcoming of the widespread conception of impeachment as a “political trial”, by reinterpreting the relationship between its legal and political dimensions as a structural-mediation relation.
