Chile constituent process and the election of native peoples: A semantic analysis with Digital Humanities

Abstract

In this article we explore the electoral contest for the seats reserved to represent native peoples in the constitutional convention in Chile at the level of programmatic and content debate. Thus, we build our approach by recovering: i) the potentialities of comparative politics among actors and ii) the concept of semantics from the systemic tradition. Methodologically, our proposal employs Digital Humanities tools, which have been scarcely used in the national discussion. The results show a transversal semantics present in elected and non-elected people, and in the distinctions between actors, we identified a cultural -particularistic semantics in non-elected candidates, and a universalist semantics in those who were elected. Finally, in the discussion, considering the results, we argue that it is necessary to advance in the understanding of heterogeneity and difference within the native peoples, and also, in understanding political semantics from their multiscalarity and flexibility.
