Abstract

The aim of this research was to test the psychometric properties of the Heteronormative Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (HABS) in Spanish, through two studies with university samples from central-southern Chile. In study 1, 552 university students from Temuco answered the HABS online. An exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was performed, as well as a construct validity analysis by groups differentiated by gender and sexual orientation. In study 2, 374 university students from Talca, Rancagua, Valparaiso and Santiago participated, and the confirmatory factor analysis and construct validity analysis were replicated. Both studies show the two-dimensional structure of the HABS in Spanish divided into eight items. Heteronormativity scores varied by gender and sexual orientation. The HABS-8 shows acceptable reliability and validity for measuring heteronormativity in young adults. Studies are suggested to strengthen this scale and research on heteronormativity.
