Abstract

Atrioventricular block (AVB) is a cardiac electrical disorder characterized by impaired conduction from the atria to the ventricles. The aim of this article is to report the clinical case of a patient with symptomatic third-degree AVB and to review the literature on risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment. The methodology applied was an observational, descriptive, retrospective study. A literature search was performed in: Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct and Scielo of studies from the last five years in Spanish and English. Thirty-six publications were selected. The most frequent risk factors were hypertension, advanced age, male sex, marked bradycardia, etc. Diagnosis is based on electrocardiogram to determine AVB, transthoracic echocardiogram. Treatment requires implantation of a definitive pacemaker (PM), concluding that it is important to periodically monitor the functioning of the implanted PM to prevent complications.
