"Analysis of the Marine Protected Areas in Chile’s Exclusive Economic Zone after the maritime dispute with Peru: an environmental geopolitical strategy?"

Keywords: conservación, áreas marinas protegidas, geopolítica ambiental, Zona Económica Exclusiva, Chile y Perú

Abstract

This article analyses the expansion of Marine Protected Areas in Chile's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), following the redefinition of the maritime border with Peru by the International Court of Justice in 2014. The progressive establishment of national parks and reserves near border areas has acquired strategic relevance in both geopolitical and environmental terms. Using a qualitative method based on bibliographic and documentary analysis, we examine the tendency of Latin American states to resort to the Court's arbitration to resolve maritime boundary disputes with environmental implications and analyse the extension of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Chile's EEZs after the ruling. As a result, it is concluded that there has been an expansion of MPAs in the vicinity of the border zone, which could be interpreted as a strategy of environmental geopolitics.
