The Age Cleavage: Cultural Backlash in Chile

Abstract

Recent literature suggests that cultural factors are gaining predictive power over ideological ones in explaining electoral behavior in established democracies. But does this also occur in new democracies? This article seeks to answer this question by looking at evidence from Chile. It uses survey data to compare cultural factors to ideological determinants and global age cohorts to local political generations. It shows that the pattern in Chile matches the one observed in developed democracies.
