Abstract

Youth participation – recognizing their multiple identities and voices – is critical for planning education policies, designing education delivery and management systems, empowering teaching, enhancing learning, and learning assessment, developing values and skills for life and work, and promoting equitable and quality lifelong learning opportunities. This chapter draws upon the recommendations made by the Beijing Consensus on Artificial Intelligence and Education (2019) to derive insights into why it is imperative to hear and include student voices when it comes to the design, development, deployment, and regulation of AI systems in the field of education. It argues that adult-centric perspectives for AI and education may hinder young people from actively engaging and becoming involved in decisions that are important to them and relevant for their future. In addition, it highlights some methodological recommendations based on an evolving experience of student-centred design and research in Latin America.
