Abstract

The Magallanes Regional Museum holds a document that contains the record of a series of hunting incursions carried out between 1875 and 1878 by a group of Sandy Point sealers in the western archipelago area of Patagonia, where they headed in search of fur seals (Arctocephalus australis). It is the diary/logbook of the schooner Anita, a vessel owned by the Portuguese immigrant José Nogueira, from whose review and analysis the dynamics, extent and implications of local sealing operations are assessed.
