Is Bitcoin money? An analysis of its monetary status from the credit theory of money

Abstract

The paper examines the disruptive phenomenon that Bitcoin constitutes in the global money system. It aims to refute the general statement «Bitcoin is money», making available for discussion in Chile an explanation in Spanish that is not only limited to clarify the functioning of Bitcoin, but also inquiries into its supposedly monetary condition. Under the credit theory of money, the paper analyzes what money is and proposes not to assimilate the concepts of money and means of payment, closing the work with an application of the credit theory of money to the scheme of operation of Bitcoin to conclude that Bitcoin is not money, but a non-credit digital means of payment and therefore sui generis.
