Living in a man's world: Leader identity self-concordance as a conflict reduction mechanism
Keywords: diversity, gender, identity, Women leadership, Leader development
Abstract
This paper explored one of the main barriers for women to develop as leaders: the inherent conflict between their gender and leader social identities. The authors take an internal perspective of these socially contradictory identities by exploring the internal mechanisms women use to overcome this conflict. Drawing upon self-concordance literature, the authors advance in the understanding of the sources of gender-leader identity conflict, and the consequences of their motivation to develop as leaders.
