A second transition? Populism and Militarism in Latin America
Keywords: América Latina, , Fuerzas Armadas, seguridad, populismo, transición
Abstract
Populism and militarization are constant phenomena in Latin Americaâs recent history. By affirming that democratic transitions in the XX century failed to subordinate the military and security forces under the civil authority, the article explores the dynamics between democratic transitions, populism and the role of the armed and security forces. The article seeks to contribute to the debate on the recent hybridization and autocratization of Latin America.
