LIATAN, a new laboratory for applied research at the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana
Abstract
LIATAN has been recently installed at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales, Matem & aacute;tica y del Medio Ambiente, of the Universidad Tecnol & oacute;gica Metropolitana located in Santiago, Chile, to carry out atomic and nuclear techniques for applied research such as environmental analysis and materials science. LIATAN is composed of four units. The main one is based on an HVE 3.75-MV Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator, which is currently equipped with two end stations, one dedicated to Elastic Backscattering Spectrometry (EBS) analysis and the other one dedicated to Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis, both in-vacuum and in-air. The calibration of the terminal voltage, as well as PIXE and EBS performance, is presented. Additionally, LIATAN is equipped with a Gamma-Ray Spectrometry Analysis Laboratory, a mobile unit for air quality studies, and the Laboratory for Climate Change Studies with Artificial Intelligence. The main characteristics and some results of these facilities are presented in this work.
