Contextualizing Digital Capabilities in South American SME Operations: Reviewing Maturity Assessments considering Regional and Cultural Characteristics
Keywords: Cultural adaptation, Digital Maturity, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), Global Supply Chains (GSCs)
Abstract
This paper examines the importance of assessing the digital maturity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South America, specifically in Chile, within the context of global supply chains (GSCs). Given the rise of digitalization and its impact on operational efficiency, it posits that digital maturity models (DMMs) must be adapted to regional and cultural characteristics. The study, which includes a comparative analysis of DMMs and a preliminary validation of an adjusted maturity assessment tool, is based on interviews with three Chilean SMEs from different sectors. The findings suggest that while perceptions of digitalization vary, culture and organizational hierarchy significantly influence the adoption of digital technologies. The study concludes that an integrative approach is essential, encompassing continuous training and the development of coherent digital strategies tailored to local contexts, to enhance the competitiveness of SMEs in an increasingly digitalized global landscape.
