Correlation Analysis of the Incidence in the Cognitive Capacity of a Physical Activity Program in Older Women of Chile
Abstract
The present work aims to determine the correlation of the impact on cognitive capacity of a twelve-week physical activity programme for women over 60yrs (n=33) without disabilities in the Commune of Iquique, Chile. Before and after the intervention period, the cognitive condition of the study sample was evaluated. The variables to be assessed were: temporal orientation, spatial orientation, Immediate fixation or recall, attention and calculation, delayed rerall and language. The measurement instrument used was the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) (Folstein et al., 1975). The results obtained show a substantial improvement of the MMSE post, in the majority of women this is supported through its linear trend line, with a significance value of p=0,447. Similarly, there is a direct correlation between the variables of the total MMSE calculation both pre and post. It can be concluded that there is a strong correlation between the pre and post MMSE measurement, which implies a positive effect or an improvement in cognitive capacities, due to the twelve-week intervention in women of an adequate physical activity programme, which improves the cognitive capacity of women over 60yrs and therefore their quality of life.
