Work-in-Progress: Decision Support System for the Process of Student Academic Registration
Abstract
The academic registration process takes place at the beginning of each academic period, and it is very relevant because it defines the modules students will enroll into. Thus, students must recognize and evaluate several factors during their registration process, including identifying critical paths. A critical path is a sequence of courses that minimizes the graduation time. However, choosing a critical path is not an easy task as it implies a complex analysis of the requirements and restrictions imposed by the career master plan. This article presents a decision support system to help students define critical paths during their academic registration process. The system considers semestral academic terms and has been applied at the Computer Science career at the Universidad de Talca (Chile). Preliminary results from polls show that over 90% of participant students consider that the system is both useful and usable and would utilize it as support for their academic registration process.
