Factorial Structure of the Social and Emotional Competences Questionnaire (SEC-Q) in a Sample of Chilean University Students

Abstract

Socio-emotional competencies are considered a highly relevant construct both for the academic environment and for society in general. The objective of this study was to evaluate the factorial structure of SEC-Q in a sample of Chilean university students. A linguistic adaptation of the instrument was carried out, followed by a cross-sectional design study. This study counted with the participation of 527 students (43.14% men, 56.86% women) with a mean age of 22.09 (SD=3.59), belonging to 12 universities in Chile. Two confirmatory factorial models were evaluated; the model that obtained the best goodness-of-fit indices was the one with five correlated factors. The results of the factorial invariance analysis according to sex indicate that the SEC-Q remains stable up to scalar invariance. The factors showed adequate levels of reliability due to internal consistency. This research provides evidence that supports the psychometric quality of the Social and Emotional Competencies Questionnaire, for its use in Chilean university students.
