Abstract

Alberto el jugador (1860) by Rosario Orrego is a novel that belongs within the framework of reflection on national literature developed by liberal writers, and of the literary materialization of this reflection in the national novela de costumbres. We propose a reading that will permit a critical analysis of the disciplinary apparatus of family, prison and novel that, in Orrego’s case, is complemented by the presence of a maternal and compassionate feminine figure.
