Abstract

This article discusses participatory mapping experiences developed in southern Chile. The study is expected to highlight the relevance of the mapping tool in identifying local knowledge and space use in order to support sustainable planning. Based on this exercise, the intimate inhabitance of individuals can be revealed, understanding the way in which they perceive and feel their (rural and/or urban) setting. Similarly, it is an effective way to advocate for current and traditional lifestyles which are threatened by development projects that override or replace them or as instruments to propose modifications to the environment, including community facilities and public spaces.
