Canales Urriola, Jorge

Abstract

The objective of the article is to describe the living conditions of the international migrant population and their practices of use of urban public spaces in the city of Temuco, Chile. Under a non-experimental, exploratory-descriptive and quantitative design, a survey was applied to a sample of Temuco’s foreigner residents (n = 200), using descriptive statistics for the analysis. The results indicate that the local real estate market shows incipient signs of exclusion, while low rates of use of urban spaces are observed. These evidences are probably related to the recent nature of migratory flows in the city. The article contributes to the discussion about the relationship between urban space and migration from a statistical approach to the intermediate cities of southern Chile, still understudied. It is concluded that it is necessary to analyze the specific realities of neighborhoods to arrive at more conclusive answers.
