Abstract

This paper delves into Afro-indigenous patronage in Arica and its surrounding valleys during the Late Colonial period, specifically between 1695 and 1800. It analyzes local preferences and peculiarities regarding this sacred commitment as well as motivations and scope, which tend toward creating networks and emerging prominent individuals of different ethnicities. Although Arica and its surrounding valleys reflected the administrative metropolis, parish and notarial records suggest certain areas of rapprochement, predilection or reticence among the different castes within the research area as they relate to the reality observed in the hacienda system and urban society in Lima. This is primarily because a smaller local population prompted the need to strengthen relations between the various ethnic groups.
