Abstract

This chapter provides guidance on managing type 1 diabetes during sick days. It reviews the pathophysiological mechanisms through which illnesses impact diabetes care. Key aspects of managing diabetes during illness are discussed, including the importance of frequent glucose and ketone measurements, staying hydrated, continuing insulin administration, and treating the underlying illness. The chapter covers strategies for managing diabetes during mild illnesses, as well as during vomiting and diarrhea, and outlines how to treat ketosis. It also describes management techniques for insulin injection users and those employing continuous insulin infusion systems.
