Abstract

This article proposes two 19-level active neutral point clamped self-balanced switched capacitor multilevel inverter (19L-ANPC-SCMLI) topologies for high-frequency ac power distribution systems (HFAC PDSs). Since the proposed topologies have boosting ability, each topology uses four switched capacitor (SC) cells to boost the input voltage. In addition, two dc-link capacitors, bidirectional switches, and diodes are used. The selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation technique controls the functioning of the inverter. Furthermore, it has a low device count, reduced voltage stress on power components, and self-balanced SCs which do not require additional control algorithms and sensors to balance the capacitor voltages. In addition, higher number of voltage levels leads to lower harmonic distortion. A fair comparison of voltage gain, voltage stress, device count, and the number of capacitors against the number of levels is compared for the proposed topology and state-of-the-art 19L topologies. Later, the experimental results demonstrate excellent performance of the proposed 19L-ANPC-SCMLI. Besides, high efficiency is achieved, and the maximum value is up to 94.42% at 500 W for the laboratory setup.
