Analysis of decision support systems for the green hydrogen value chain design: A comparison of literature and real-world tools
Abstract
Global environmental consequences associated with the linear economy and using conventional energy sources include rising global temperatures, droughts, and melting glaciers. These, in turn, negatively impact people's quality of life by, for example, reducing access to food and clean water for the population. In response to these challenges, the production and consumption of green hydrogen have emerged as environmentally acceptable energy alternatives. However, successful implementation relies on a series of complex decisions. Hence, decision support systems play a pivotal role in facilitating the adoption of hydrogen technology and mitigating the effects of climate change. This research aims to assess whether recent developments in the literature have evolved into practical decision support tools for designing hydrogen supply chains. The findings indicate that existing tools have predominantly focused on economic and technological aspects. In contrast, the literature explores a wide range of sustainability dimensions, primarily emphasizing economic and environmental factors. These insights highlight the need for a more holistic approach when developing decision support systems for sustainable hydrogen production and distribution.
