Abstract

The Southern Cone of South America is currently facing a complex environmental crisis which compromises the biodiversity held in its unique ecosystems. In a reality of complex environmental problems, juxtaposed with dynamic political and social scenarios, decision making that involves solid scientific evidence to undertake concrete conservation actions are urgent. Nonetheless, most times there is a gap between practitioners, academia and decision makers. This research delves into the challenges and opportunities to bridge science and practice in the context of the Southern Cone. Through a participatory dynamic, we gathered representatives of the academia, private and government sectors in a discussion panel to discuss these challenges and opportunities for our region. Among the major challenges, we found few linkages between scientists with conservation problems, lack of effective communication and, few incentives to advocate to conservation efforts. On the other hand, among the main opportunities we identified the generation of more dialogue opportunities, the modification of the academic evaluation system and the development of communications and facilitation skills. We emphasize the importance of informed decision-making supported by scientific data, but at the same time we recognize that this must occur in a multidirectional process with the commitment and involvement of several actors, both nationally and regionally.
