Life and academic purposes of Chilean university students in STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Propósitos de vida y académicos en estudiantes universitarios chilenos de carreras STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería, y Matemáticas)

Abstract

This research study aims to characterize the life and academic purposes of university students. Applying a qualitative approach and a phenomenographic design, ten second-year students from a university in southern Chile are interviewed. Data analysis is conducted in three stages: 1) information review, 2) coding, and 3) categorization. The results reveal that students are aware of their purposes. These are structured and comprise personal, familial, academic, and job-related areas. Seven types of academic purposes linked to academic progression are identified, which provide direction, happiness, motivation, assistance for overcoming obstacles, and contribute to a full-filling and satisfying academic life. To achieve academic purposes, two key dimensions are identified: academic objectives and academic goals. In conclusion, life and academic purposes are fundamental in youth as they provide meaning, motivation, and direction, acting as a self-regulating behavioral mechanism. © (2024), (Centro de Informacion Tecnologica).
