Abstract

The Chilean model of economic development, based on theextraction of natural resources, has had significant environ-mental and social impacts on the country, especially in ruralareas. The research project “Towards the construction ofsustainable schools and communities in rural areas in socio-environmental crises” studies the interaction between theunregulated exploitation of natural resources, the resultingsocio-environmental crises and the responses of schools andcommunities in the affected rural areas. Based on a documen-tary and socio-bibliometric approach, identifying the mainissues and research gaps related to the socio-environmentalcrises in the selected territories. The research showed thatthere are few studies on the role of rural schools and commu-nity organizations in the addressing of the socio-environmen-tal crises of the territories and the fostering of long-termeducational and community resilience. This reflects the lowvisibility that these communities are receiving, despite theirsignificant potential on the matter.
