Abstract

Introduction: Communication professionals have been defined by UNESCO as one of the key groups that ensure that citizens have media education. Aims/Objectives: This research measures the media competence of Chilean university communication students in the context of the constitutional process. Methodology: A mixed approach is used with an innovative and effective measurement instrument that allows us to overcome the self- perception problems of most media education questionnaires. The quantitative results are complemented by conducting four discussion groups. Results: The vast majority of future communicators present insufficient performance in their media skills. Discussion: When reviewing by dimensions, only a sufficient degree of use of technology is achieved, negatively highlighting the cases of interaction and production and dissemination processes with poor results. Conclusions: The results obtained allow us to make specific proposals to improve the curricula of Chilean communication majors.
