Longitudinal study on prenatal arsenic exposure and its persistence up to 10 years: identification of associated factors

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM[|]Arsenic exposure represents a worldwide concern. Identifying risk factors facilitates the implementation of effective measures to reduce exposure and safeguard children's health in the short and long term. The objective is to evaluate arsenic exposure in children from Arica, both in utero and at school age, along with the factors that influence changes in exposure.[¤]METHOD[|]Longitudinal design, inorganic arsenic samples were taken in urine from 450 children aged 7 to 10 years from Arica in 2023. Previously, their mothers had inorganic arsenic concentrations measured during pregnancy (2013-2016). A questionnaire was applied on sociodemographic, health and risk variables. Changes in arsenic concentration were analyzed using a non-parametric test (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) and a mixed model.
