THE RISK AROUND THE VILLARRICA VOLCANO IN CHILE: EXPOSURE, HAZARDS, AND RISK MANAGEMENT INSTRUMENTS IN COÑARIPE, LICÁN RAY, PUCÓN, AND VILLARRICA EL RIESGO EN TORNO AL VOLCÁN VILLARRICA EN CHILE: EXPOSICIÓN, PELIGROSIDAD E INSTRUMENTOS DE GESTIÓN DEL RIESGO EN COÑARIPE, LICÁN RAY, PUCÓN Y VILLARRICA
Abstract
In recent decades, population growth and urbanization in areas under volcanic threat have emerged as one of the primary challenges for disaster risk reduction and management, raising concerns in various parts of the world. Chile is not exempt from this phenomenon, given its status as home to one of the most active volcanic chains globally. Consequently, this study delves into the analysis of volcanic hazards (lahars and lava) and urban expansion linked to the Villarrica Volcano, particularly in the towns of Villarrica, Pucón, and Licán Ray, situated in the La Araucanía region, as well as Coñaripe in the Los Ríos region, Chile. The key findings not only disclose a concentration and higher population density in the vulnerable areas but also underscore the imperative to update risk management instruments in light of the prevailing conditions in these territories.
