Images of the Chilean Coup d'état in foreign media: visual narratives between September 12 and October 17, 19731
Abstract
This article examines how the Argentinian, Peruvian Spanish, French and Austrian press reported on the Chilean coup d'etat of September 11, 1973, by means of photographic images. We conducted a qualitative study analyzing 358 photographs from 13 international newspapers published between September 12 and October 17, 1973. The results show diverse visual narratives that describe the breakdown of Chilean democracy through references to the Popular Unity government, the coup, and the beginning of the dictatorship.
