Abstract

The discussion surrounding Non-Sexist Language is a space where power relations are disputed and conflicting positions emerge in the social field, reflecting different political standpoints. In this article, the results of 16 semi-structured interviews regarding the topic of Non-Sexist Language are analyzed and discussed, aiming to describe the political positions associated with it. The analyses are conducted from the perspectives of glottopolitics and Rational Choice Theory. The interviews were analyzed using content analysis, and the results reveal the configuration of two major profiles: Some people manifest openness to social change through collective struggle and the practices of social movements, while others convey ideas that aim more at the maintenance of the social order and current power relations. These profiles indicate clearly differentiated groups regarding the meaning, possibilities, and desirability of using non-sexist language.
